Mr. G's Round Hill Lodge

George "Mr. G." Evening Light | "Mr. G." | Pat Rainey | History | Halloween 1972 | Ghosts

Mr. George Grossman

For those whose paths never crossed, who never had the great fortune to have actually met "George", our "proprietor and benevolent benefactor", this is our "Mr. G.", without whom "The Lodge" would never have been and so many lives would have been at such a great loss.

Although he was there, at some time, in some place, he was, for the mmost part, "one of the crowd", not so much a "presence" in his compassionate humility, never one to make a "fuss" about his proprietorship. But his kindness, caring, concern and compassion were always obvious.

Every individual at The Lodge was a "Family member", and George was our "Patriarch", a father who watched, with care, the atmosphere and ambience of every gathering, every day and evening, making sure that we were all safe and well. Whether or not any one of us had an interaction with him, it was always known that we were free to celebrate being together, joyful or mournful, as Friends, Lovers and even as adversaries, but at no time would anything that could put any one of us in danger would be tolerated. Disagreements were to be expected, but as any good and proper father would do, George allowed for "settlements" with-out damages. "Mr. G's Round Hill Resort" was "home", and every one was welcome and expected to regard it with the respect the place AND George so deserved. "Locals" and "regulars" knew this, and "sojourners" quickly learned and appreciated the sanctity of the place. To be clear, "The Lodge" wasn't simply a "business", it was, as said, "home", unique in its own right. George created and maintained it as such, and every one of us was grateful to him for that.

It was almost impossible to differentiate between "staff" and "guest" because every one was a part of the Family. "Quirky" as it might be, even the music on the juke-box hinted at George's awareness of and caring for and about "us". Songs like "Denise", "Bernadette", "Wedding Bell Blues" and others were part of a "permanent collection", placed and kept with some one in particular in mind. (We knew who those people were, they knew who they were and so too, did George.) There were "messages in the music", "notes" to the gathering. George knew... and cared.

At present (2025), there's still not much known about George, the individual, nor about his acquisition of The Lodge. There are vague references to the opening in 1969, but as of this writing, nothing prior to or after the blaze that took Mr. G's and Mr. G. from us. To be sure, if and when any further particulars become known and available, this tribute to one of the world's GREATEST will be added. George was, to many, the Best Friend, the kindest soul and will hold a place of the highest admiration in the hearts and memories of those who came to know of him.

This "portrait" (worked from a photograph) is possible, with thanks and because of his grand-daughter who, in August 2025, happened-upon this site and sent it along. (I'm stil awe-struck and grateful beyond mere words that, after all the years of this, my personal obsession with the man and the place, the legacy stil has * LIFE *.)
